Marvel’s Spider-Man first launched on the Sony PlayStation 4 (PS4) console in 2018 to critical acclaim. In 2020, Sony re-released Spider-Man as a remastered game for its PlayStation 5 (PS5) console, as well as debuting a spin-off sequel, Spider-Man: Miles Morales. With a sequel, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 coming out, Sony offered a Spider-Man-themed PS5 console and accessories. As a big Marvel buff, I snagged the Spider-Man DualSense controller for the PlayStation 5. But is it worth it? Find out in my hands-on Spider-Man PS5 controller review!
DualSense PS5 Spider-Man Controller Review
Sony’s PS5 Spider-Man controller is a limited edition DualSense gamepad released in conjunction with the launch of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. It’s a slick-looking black controller with a white Spider-Man logo front and center, and red coloring on the right-hand side of the unit.
While the triggers, thumbsticks, and directional pad (D-Pad) are all black, the X, Triangle, Y, and Square buttons are white, providing nice contrast. The overall design with black, red, and white evokes a symbiote takeover–Venom features prominently in Spider-Man 2.
The DualSense 5 controller is a great gamepad. It’s extremely comfortable to hold, and boasts a built-in speaker. The haptic feedback delivers a more immersive experience with its use of vibrations to mimic in-game elements. Likewise, its adaptive triggers provide variable resistance while playing. For instance, if you’re pulling yourself up on a web in Spider-Man, the triggers may become stiffer as you scale a building.
There’s also a built-in headphone jack which lets you plug in a set of gaming headphones. It’s certainly a nice feature, although I prefer using my Audeze Penrose wireless gaming headset.
While I largely use my Spider-Man DualSense controller with my PS5 game console, I like the ability to pair it with my Windows PC to use with Steam and other PC games, or my Android and iOS mobile devices using PS Remote Play.
Battery life could be better, but it’s not terrible at all. Additionally, the DualSense Spider-Man PS5 remote doesn’t come with a USB-C charging cable in the box. Granted, the PS5 console comes with a USB Type-C cable, and if you need an extra you can always snag a third-party one. Better yet, you can cop a DualSense charging dock or PlayStation 5 cooling base with charging stations.
Despite its slightly higher than normal typical cost tag when compared with the MSRP of non-limited edition DualSense 5 controllers, the Spider-Man PS5 gamepad isn’t overpriced. You get a fantastic looking custom Spider-Man PS5 controller that works with not only your Sony PlayStation 5, but your gaming PC, Android phone/tablet, iPhone, or iPad.
PlayStation 5 Spider-Man Controller Review: Final Thoughts
Overall, this is an excellent gamepad for fans of Marvel’s Spider-Man. If you’re a Marvel comics and movies buff or Spider-Man game series enthusiast, picking one up is a no-brainer. Otherwise, you can snag a standard PS5 controller for cheaper and save a few bucks. For more sweet Sony gaming peripherals, check out the best PlayStation 5 gaming headsets.
